Santander attractions: plan a smooth visit to the city's best

Santander's sights are strung between the old town and the sea, so a single day can take in a hilltop cathedral, a Renzo Piano art centre above a garden promenade, and a palace on a green headland. The cathedral draws the most searches and suits a short stop; the Centro Botín and the Palacio de la Magdalena sit further along the waterfront.

Knowing what needs booking changes the shape of a trip. The Palacio de la Magdalena is visited on a Spanish-language guided walk of two hours that leaves from the north door, so book ahead and arrive fifteen minutes early. The maritime museum's free Tuesday afternoon also needs reserving, while the Centro Botín's exhibitions are best checked for dates before you go.

Allow under an hour for the cathedral, where the Iglesia del Cristo sits beneath the upper church on Calle Somorrostro, and two hours for the maritime museum by Playa de los Peligros. The Centro Botín asks one to two hours, and the palace tour plus its quarter-hour meet-up covers two hours and fifteen minutes.
