Almería attractions: plan the fortress, cathedral and pier

Almería's sights split sharply between what you pay for and what you Don't. The tenth-century Alcazaba climbs a hill above the old medina through three walled enclosures and costs nothing, while the Cathedral nearby charges €8.00 for its interior.

Between them sits the Cable Inglés, a 1904 iron ore pier over Playa de las Almadrabillas that is now a free walkway. The bare iron deck offers no shade, so walk it early or late; it takes about 20 minutes.

Allow two hours for the fortress and 60 to 90 minutes for the Cathedral. Booking is not needed at the Alcazaba or the pier, but is recommended for the Cathedral, where special opening notices are posted for individual dates.

A tenth-century hilltop fortress above Almería's old medina, free to enter, with three walled enclosures climbing from gardens and cisterns to a Christian castle. The continuous ascent makes the midday summer heat a real obstacle, so start early and carry water.

Refugios de la Guerra Civil, Almería: Visiting the Civil War Shelters

Temporarily closed: Closed for restoration and museum work after a fire; reopening aimed at summer 2026 but unconfirmed.

The tunnels beneath the Paseo de Almería, dug to shelter civilians from the 754 bombs that fell on the city, are shut for restoration, and the council's summer 2026 reopening is an aim, not a date to book around.

What costs nothing in Almería

The Alcazaba de Almería opens free, with three enclosures rising from gardens and cisterns to a Christian castle. Start early to avoid the midday heat and carry water.

The Cable Inglés is free to walk, a 1904 ore pier over Playa de las Almadrabillas. The carved sun on the Cathedral's east facade is also free from the street, even though the interior costs €8.00.

The Civil War shelters are shut for now

The Refugios de la Guerra Civil beneath the Paseo de Almería, dug to shelter civilians from 754 bombs, are closed for restoration and museum work after a fire while reopening is worked towards, so plan around them. The Alcazaba, Cathedral and Cable Inglés remain open.

With the tunnels out of reach, give the walking hours to the hilltop fortress instead, then finish with the Cathedral's three naves and carved choir stalls on the same day.
