Ibiza Town sightseeing: start at the gate, climb to the cathedral

Ibiza Town's sights stack vertically. The Portal de ses Taules, the cobbled gate above La Marina, is where Dalt Vila begins, and from there everything is uphill: the cathedral waits on Plaça de la Catedral at the summit, reached by climbing through the walled town's gates and lanes. The Baluard de Santa Llúcia looks out over sa Penya and the harbour from the ramparts; the Puig des Molins cemetery lies on its own low hill 500 metres west of Dalt Vila.

The gate, with its coat of arms, imperial crown, old entry chains and Roman statues, costs nothing and needs no booking, and it makes a short stop. The bastion is free as well and takes a few minutes on foot. Allow an hour for the cathedral's 14th- and 15th-century Gothic paintings and the gold-plated monstrance from 1399.

Booking ahead is advised for the necropolis, and the site closes on Mondays and public holidays, with seasonal hours. Build the climb and the archaeology into separate halves of a day and the walking stays manageable.

The gate and the bastion cost nothing

The Portal de ses Taules is the free public route into the walled town, a cobbled ramp and drawbridge above La Marina where the arch carries a coat of arms, an imperial crown and old entry chains, and Roman statues flank the gate. The Baluard de Santa Llúcia, a gun bastion on the ramparts over sa Penya, charges nothing either and takes only a few minutes, with gun positions, masonry and a drop to the harbour below.

Reserve the necropolis before you go

The Puig des Molins necropolis is the stop to arrange in advance, since booking is recommended and the site keeps seasonal hours, closing on Mondays and public holidays. The visit runs about an hour, with the empty rock-cut cemetery on its low hill paired with the museum holding its grave goods. The slope is unshaded in summer, so pick a cooler slot in the day.
